Card types are the Credit and Debit cards that you use on the high street. Credit / Debit card transactions are processed differently on the Internet so some vendors may not be able to process all card types.

 Which cards can I process?

The card types you are allowed to process are directly related to your Merchant Agreement that you have with your Acquiring bank. The cards you are allowed to process are agreed between you and your bank when you obtained your Internet Merchant Number.

It also depends on the currencies you support.
  •   GBP Merchants can process all standard cards.

  •   Multi-currency Merchant numbers are restricted to Mastercard, Visa and the Visa   Delta card types:

Not all acquiring banks process all cards. Amex, Diners and JCB process and settle their own transactions and require you to have an Internet Merchant agreement directly with them. You will not be able to process these card types unless you have an Amex, Diners and JCB Internet Merchant Number.

NB: When you register with Protx you select the card types you know you are able to support. Selecting card types you do not support will only cause transaction failures or settlement issues.

The following cards can be processed through your acquiring bank
VISA
A Visa Credit card for processing all currencies.
VISA DELTA
A Debit card for processing all Currencies.
(Processed as DELTA not VISA)
VISA ELECTRON
A Debit card for processing GBP only.
(Processed as UKE not VISA)
MASTERCARD
A MasterCard Credit card for processing all currencies.

UK MAESTRO
SOLO

These are MasterCard Debit cards. Protx will process payments for UK merchants ONLY with settlement in GBP.

SWITCH cards are being re-branded as 'Maestro'. However, SWITCH branded cards can still be accepted for transactions until 31st July 2007.

Maestro cards will be passed as a card Type of 'SWITCH'.

International Maestro cards are now supported by Protx. These cards must be 3D Secured and a fixed rule base will need to be applied to only allow 3D Authenticated transactions otherwise they will be failed.

The following cards are processed through the Card issuer and a specific Internet Merchant Number is required directly from the Acquirer:
American Express

Protx can process and settle payments in most currencies. Merchants will need to obtain an Internet Merchant Number for each currency that they wish to process through American Express.

Diners Club

Protx can process and settle payments in EUR, GBP and USD. Merchants will need to obtain an Internet Merchant Number for each currency that they wish to process.

JCB
(Japan Credit Bureau)

How do I set up card types on my account?

When you register with Protx you select the cards that you wish to process.

If you already have an account with Protx and wish to accept more cards/currencies, you will need to confirm with your acquiring bank that you can support the option you require and that you have the correct Internet Merchant Number if applicable. You will then need to email the support team

How do I test these cards?

If you are using our VSP Server or VSP Form Services, the card type will appear on the payment pages in the cart type drop down list.

If you are using our VSP Direct Service, you will capture the card details and pass them to Protx to obtain authorisation.

Card Types to be used in your script are:

  •   Visa = VISA

  •   Visa Delta/Debit = DELTA

  •   Visa Electron = UKE

  •   Mastercard = MC

 What about card fraud?

Protx provide the following Card Fraud protections options:

  • Address Verification (AVS) & Security Code Verification (CV2) - Protx passes the shopper's card and address details to the bank / card issuer to check against their records. They will confirm if they match or not. NB: AVS is for UK addresses only.

  • 3D Secure Authentication - where card issuers enable cardholders to join the Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode authentication scheme, cardholders can then use a password to identify themselves to the card issuer when they pay online (using a credit card from Visa or MasterCard).
